Mark Knopfler, his dobro playing, very much distinctive for me, (and his g.ma i bet), his acoustic and electric pretty much the same. You call it the g.ma test thats funny, dig it.
I look at it like a fingerprint, those musicians you mentioned all put thier fingerpint on a note when played. I can usally pick Townshend out of a mix but I wouldn't put him in the group you have. For country fans Waylon Jennings puts that fingerprint on a note also, IMO.
